I Can't Get This One Straight

Before I explain the title of this post, I should warn you that in my family, all roads lead to poopy jokes.  That said, I'll continue.

When my niece was five years old, my mom and I picked her up after school everyday.  One day when we were in a small bookstore, she felt the urge.  If you've ever dealt with a five year old who needs to go, you'll know they don't care where they are or who's around.  They have to go.  So, this bookstore had a tiny bathroom with ply-wood walls in the middle of the store.  She was in there for a while, making all kinds of noises which could be heard by all in the store.  I asked if she was okay, and she grunted, "I... can't... get... this one... STRAIGHT!"  I about died laughing.  It's been a standing joke in our house ever since.  When we have a problem getting something to come out right, we quote my niece.

Now, for the reason behind the poopy story.  I can't get this painting straight.  I've been working on it for days.  I've redone Grayson's face three times, and I'm happy with most of it now.  I've only done Grant's face twice, and it still needs something.  I'm going to stare it down for a couple more days and see if I can figure out where it's wrong.  I thought it was only fair to share the main reason you haven't been hearing from me this week.  I've been a woman obsessed.  Be kind in your criticisms, and I'll eventually share the finished piece!

Stepping Out

Because of the personal nature of Jeff's job, he meets and forms relationships with all sorts of people.  Every once in a while, he will meet someone who in one way or another changes our lives.  He met one such lady last week.  She is a retired college art professor, and she had a LOT to say about my artwork.  Without going into detail, she encouraged me to put myself out there, and gave me pointers on things I was iffy on.  So, thanks to Mrs. Welch, I am now in the business of painting.  I'll be putting some paintings in my Etsy shop, and will also offer portraits by commission.  So y'all pass the word around to your friends!  Mother's Day is just around the corner...

Just a quick note: the price of this painting does not reflect the price of a commissioned portrait.  This particular one took more time than usual and is larger than normal.

The Family Rock Star

Andy2_2

My big brother Andy is a great musician.  He plays guitar, sings, writes... he does it all.  He also happens to be the man when it comes to home repair.  He has always been there for us to paint, tile, build, whatever we need.  A while back he bought his first home, and he asked me to paint something for his den.  I thought and thought of how to portray Andy without doing a portrait, and this is what came to me.  I'm not 100% sure it's finished, but I think it is.  So here you have it... "Family Rock Star."

This one's not perfect, but I'm finished.  I posted it once and deleted it to touch up a few things, but I think I've done all I can do.

Lost bits

Img_4234

It seems like for most of us, becoming a mom means losing bits of yourself here and there.  I used to love paint, but I haven't touched a canvas since Grayson was born.  Part of that was because my paintings used to be dark and moody, and Grayson brought so much sunshine into my life I couldn't paint that way anymore.  Then there's the pressure.  I never quite feel like a painting is finished, so I keep touching up and tweaking it and am never truly satisfied with how it looks.  Seriously, my palms are sweating right now because I know you are all going to see this one.

Thanks to the encouragement of friends like this one and this one I have decided to find this lost part of who I am this year.  This is the first of what I hope will be many paintings to share, and my first attempt at people EVER!  I'm feeling a little queasy about sharing it with the world, so I'm going to publish now, before I change my mind!

Sew Magical!

I sewed, I sewed, I finally sewed!!  I have been wanting to learn to use a sewing machine for ages.  I never took home ec or home management or whatever they called it when I was in school, so I just never learned.  Well, since I had my boys I there have been several times when I've gone begging to my mom, who does sew beautifully, to make this or that for them.  As nice as that is, there is a certain satisfaction that comes from doing something yourself.  Plus there are lots of things I would like to make that aren't important enough to bother mom with, but would be really cool to have.  Case in point, my first EVER sewing project, a magician's cape for Grayson!

Individualsoccer_299

We bought the material yesterday, and bless his heart he thought I would just whip him up a cape before bedtime.  So, since he was so excited, I decided today was the day.  It didn't take as long as I thought, or turn out as badly as I feared.  Grayson LOVES it.  Big time.  He swirled around the house all day, enjoying the way it swished around him. I think besides feeling special, he also felt pretty cool.  What do you think?

Being the sweety that he is, he didn't want Grant to be left out of the magic action.  So he rigged him up with a prince cape he has, my ball cap, and a screwdriver for a wand.  Oh, did you think he was going to share his new cape?  He's only human, you know.

Need your opinion on this one

Okay, this is going to be a weird post I guess.  Our laptop was recently ressurected from the computer graveyard, and when it was I found this story/poem I had forgotten about.  I also forgot I wrote it with two endings.  The thought at the time was that I would choose which one I like, illustrate it, and give it to Grayson as a gift.  Unfortunately I am chronically indecisive.  So I am going to post both versions here, and I would love for you to leave me a comment voting for your favorite.  Help a poor girl make up her mind!  Here goes...

#1

Once upon a time there was a little boy named Grayson.  He loved to play pirates and did it quite well using his imagination.  He could dream daring swordfights and treasure galore; swashbuckling his way to his hideout on shore.

One day as he played a big ship pulled portside and the captain said “Aaargh!” as he rocked with the tide.  “Join us me hearty.  Great things you will see if you’ll lay down your toys and go sailing with me.”

Well, who could say no?  Who wouldn’t go?  Grayson threw down his sword with a big “Yo-ho-ho!”  He climbed aboard ship and joined with the crew swabbing the decks like all good pirates do.

Two or three days into sailing the sea they came up on an island with one lonely tree.  One lonely tree with a sand hill below which was marked with an X painted red and yellow.

“Land ahoy, Cap’n.  And treasure to boot!  X marks the spot where we’ll find our loot.”  A real buried treasure was his to take home.  Was it rubies or diamonds or silver or gold?

Those pirates and Grayson, they dug and they shoveled.  They sweated and toiled and they strained and they struggled.  Then with a clank they hit something solid… then they shoveled some more and that’s when they saw it…

A rounded brown chest with two thick rope handles, a solid brass lock from which two keys dangled.  They got the thing open, and to their surprise, nothing inside was a valuable prize.

There was a picture of Grayson with his mom and his dad, and one tiny pocketknife passed down from Grandad.  There was an autographed picture from his favorite sports team and the teddy he sleeps with when he has a bad dream.

All of these things made him think of his home with his mom waiting for him with the front porch light on.  “I’m through here,” said Grayson.  “I want to go back.”  He laid down his sword and took off his hat.

He wiped off his mustache and rolled down his pants and he climbed from the ship and never looked back.  He walked right off that island and what do you think?  He did not swim, nor did he sink.

He just walked right straight home to his momma and dad and told them of all the adventures he had.  They did not seem surprised; they did not seem afraid.  They acted like it was a normal old day.

Over all seven seas their pirate ship rolled, 'til they spotted an island and called out "Land Ho!"  Now, on this island was rumored to be a most marvelous treasure, the biggest you've seen!

Into the lifeboats the pirate crew tumbled carrying a map quite faded and rumpled.  "To the shore!" cried the captain and peered through his glass.  "We will find it, me hearties, our treasure at last."

They rowed up on shore and they trudged across sand, over dunes and through valleys then over again.  They were hot.  They were tired.  They needed a rest, but they kept on going.  They gave it their best.

"Look there!" cried Grayson, "this is the place!  The X is as plain as the nose on your face!"  They whooped, and they hollered and danced a new jig; then got down to business and started to dig.

"We've got it!" gasped Grayson, and have it they did.  They heaved up the trunk and opened the lid.  At the sight of such riches their eyes all grew round, and some of them fainted and fell to the ground.

There were diamonds and rubies and jewels of all sizes, but what should they do with their sparkly prizes?  They could buy heaps of candy or give to the poor.  They could own every toy and every toy store.

They huddled together and talked it all out, and came up with a plan they were happy about.  They closed up the treasure and filled the hole in, so tomorrow they could have this adventure again!

They sailed back over oceans to Grayson's home port, and he waved to them all as he closed his back door.  He put down his sword and his black pirate hat, then he got settled in for his afternoon nap.

Charcoal number 2

Well, here’s charcoal number two.  They’re getting better, but still nothing to write home about.  Each kid seems to have something that I just can’t get right, and Grant’s is his eyes.  They are this incredible blue and so bright.  How do you convey that with charcoal?  I’m trying to figure it out.  The pictures look like him somewhat, but without the mischievous expression he always has in his eyes.

Grayson’s problem area is his nose and chin.  They are both SO HARD!  I was trying to draw him today and I practically erased through the paper.  THAT picture will not be making it to the blog for sure!  It’s not something I can pinpoint either.  I’ve examined the drawing line by line and shadow by shadow, and I can’t see what’s wrong, but something definitely is.  His looks more like a caricature than a portrait.  Oh well, practice makes perfect, so here I go to give it one more shot.  Maybe it will eventually make it into the blog after all.  Only time will tell!

dusting off the charcoals

I set some goals for myself at the beginning of the year.  Along with the usual weight related ones, I also decided to learn some new skills.  I never learned to sew, and I decided it was high time.  Right now I am working on needle work, specifically embroidery, so that when I am able to get a sewing machine I can start all the wonderful hand embroidered projects I have swimming around in my head right now.  I also decided I should learn to knit.  So far I have got the basic stitches down, but I can't seem to make myself sit down and truly knit something when I know we are about three days away from eighty degree weather.

I also decided that it was high time I made room in my life for art again.  Not just going to museums and crafting with my kids, but my own art.  This one was far easier said than done, because it's not just a matter of getting out the supplies, but finding inspiration and creativity left over at the end of the day.  Most of the things I've done in the past have been very moody, very imaginative things, not even close to realism.  I'm just not that person anymore.  I don't have dark, brooding days conducive to that type of painting anymore.  So instead, I thought I would draw my inspiration from the same place I do in other areas of my life... my boys.

So even though in Grayson's expert opinion it looks nothing like him, here is my first attempt at dusting off the ol' charcoals:
