Paintings and President's Days Past
About a hundred twelve years ago, the funky blond in that picture was me. My partner in crime was my best friend at the time, Alyssa. We were always into something that would have gotten us into trouble had we been caught.
I remember one time we got all worked up about how unfair it was to be out of school for Martin Luther King Jr's birthday, but not for President's Day. After all, President's Day honored... um... somebody really important, right?! We felt, as students, that we should stand up for our rights and show allegiance to our country by having a sit-in protest in the school gym, and not going to any of our classes. We quietly started rumors buzzing around the school about it, and then printed fliers advertising the event. Before we knew it, everyone was talking about the protest.
When the big day arrived, the gym was full of kids. Some were joking, some were singing, some made up silly chants to repeat over and over. Until Vice Principal Lacey came in with her megaphone. She made an announcement to the effect that whoever was still in the gym in five minutes was going to spend the rest of the week suspended from school. You'd have thought the gym was on fire that place cleared out so fast. At least that's the way I heard the story told the next day. Alyssa and I decided our protest would be most effective if we didn't go to school at all that day. We were just so patriotic.
Anyhoo, that long lost little girl in the photo above painted this picture. It's one of the few I kept for myself, and I came across it in the top of the playroom closet, so I thought I'd show you guys!

You were quite the little hippy, weren't you!? I like that painting, though, the primary colors and simple shapes would be great in a kids room!

You so rarely post pictures of your face that I can't get a fix on the kids and you and who looks like who. WOW -- Grant. But I see Grayson in there, too. He's all mixed up with Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell and the rest of the flower children.

Yeah, the colors might work in a kid's room, but Grayson told me it was scary. He thinks I should put it right back up in the closet. ;)

I love seeing a photo of a younger you, very cool! That painting is awfully similar to the style I painted in at that age, too. :) Maybe it´s a teen thing?

That is such a great photo! It's amazing to look back on ourselves and our work from that time. I am sooo impressed about the gym protest! I would have LOVED to have been at the centre of something like that :-) I know. Attention seeker.
The painting is certainly a taste of things to come.

Gasp! Ripped jeans? And is that cigs I see between your fingers? Aaaah, so you have had wild days. Good to know (hide this pic from teenage Grayson and Grant.) Kekeke. That was a cool protest. If 10 years down the road and you complain either one of your princes are making mayhem in school, I'm gonna remind you of this entry. =P
